🌿 Birak — The Season of the Young (Dec–Jan)

Hot, dry, easterly winds; high fire risk

Focus: Protect plants, retain water, reduce stress

Checklist:

  • Mulch deeply in pots, garden beds, and under trees

  • Provide shade for seedlings, young veggies, and potted plants

  • Prioritise watering trees, shrubs, and perennials over lawns

  • Check irrigation for leaks and ensure efficient watering

  • Secure light or tall plants against coastal winds

  • Avoid planting heat-sensitive crops this season


🔥 Bunuru — The Season of Adolescence (Feb–Mar)

Hottest, driest time; marine stress on coastal areas

Focus: Conserve water, protect plants, observe heat tolerance

Checklist:

  • Maintain and replenish mulch to prevent soil drying

  • Water deeply, early morning or late evening

  • Protect coastal pots and sensitive plants from salt-laden winds

  • Record which plants are thriving under heat—plan future plantings

  • Reduce fertiliser use; stress plants naturally slows growth

  • Provide temporary shade cloths for exposed courtyard areas


🍂 Djeran — The Season of Adulthood (Apr–May)

Cooling, first autumn rains

Focus: Soil building, planting preparation, seed saving

Checklist:

  • Add compost and organic matter to garden beds and pots

  • Begin planting cool-season vegetables and hardy natives

  • Observe where water flows or pools for smarter irrigation

  • Mulch early before soils dry

  • Increase plant diversity in pots, raised beds, and garden corners

Warming temperatures, longer dry spells

Focus: Preparation for summer, water efficiency, shade

Checklist:

  • Strengthen shade cloths, windbreaks, and potted plant positions

  • Repair and check irrigation systems before summer heat
